In 1979, the “Fifth Beatle” George Martin built AIR Studios Montserrat, a recording studio on the island of Montserrat, in the Caribbean. During its ten years of operation, between 1979 and 1989, AIR Montserrat, as it became commonly known, hosted artists such as Paul McCartney, Rolling Stones, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, The Police, Rush, Eric Clapton, Nazareth, Earth, Wind and Fire, Duran Duran, James Taylor and Dire Straits, among others of equal renown. More than seventy albums were recorded at AIR Montserrat, and that was exactly what motivated Sallaberry, a Brazilian drummer and music producer, residing in Florida, to research the subject. According to Sallaberry, “it all started from a photo of the dilapidated studio, in 2019, and since then there have been four years of research and interviews with the studio staff, music producers and artists, in a total of sixty interviews”. As a result of the work carried out, Sallaberry released the book “On the Hurricane Route”, with 208 pages and 45 chapters. “The history of the studio is fascinating, as well as the albums that were recorded there, and in order to be able to write and 'live' a little of this history, it was essential to go to Montserrat and visit the studio, which although it is closed to the public, I obtained authorization special visit from Judy Martin, widow of George Martin”, concludes Sallaberry. During his time at AIR Montserrat, Sallaberry, in addition to producing photographic material for the book, also recorded a 38-minute documentary video, showing unpublished images of the studio in ruins, in addition to commenting on curiosities of the albums recorded at AIR. “In partnership with my daughter, Thaís Sallaberry, we recorded just over an hour of images", concludes Sallaberry.
