The EIC is thrilled to announce the Breakfast in Rio: Opportunities in the SURF equipment market with TechnipFMC and Saipem

TechnipFMC has established itself as a leader in flexible pipeline technology, reinforcing its expertise with innovative and customized solutions.

Recently, the company was awarded two new contracts by Petrobras for the acquisition of subsea equipment and flexible pipelines, valued at approximately US$ 499m. The equipment will enable production in the Búzios, Libra, Tupi, Atapu, Sépia, and Roncador fields in the Santos and Campos basins. The contracts with TechnipFMC stipulate a minimum local content of up to 55% for equipment manufacturing and 40% for service provision, which the company aims to exceed.

One of the contracts includes the supply of up to 19 Wet Christmas Trees (WCTs), 5 Electro-Hydraulic Distribution Units (EHDUs) with spare equipment, and associated services for technical assistance, installation, intervention, preservation, and maintenance of the equipment. The flexible line contract covers the supply of up to 27.9 km of Riser-type flexible pipelines for gas injection,with accessories and associated storage, technical assistance, supervision, assembly and logistics services.

TechnipFMC has also secured a major contract with ExxonMobil to provide subsea production systems for the Whiptail oil project off the coast of Guyana. TechnipFMC will deliver project management, engineering, and manufacturing to supply 48 subsea trees and associated equipment, as well as 12 manifolds, controls, and mooring equipment. The contract is valued between US$500m and US$1bn.

Created in Italy, Saipem is a global leader in engineering services for the design, construction and operation of complex infrastructures and plants in the energy sector, both offshore and onshore. 

In late 2023, Saipem was awarded a contract by ExxonMobil entailing the installation of SURF equipment to help develop the Whiptail offshore oil field in Guyana, a project in a water depth of approximately 2,000 meters, Saipem's scope of work includes the design, manufacture and installation of subsea structures, risers, flowlines and umbilicals for a 250,000 b/d FPSO to be deployed in the area by late 2027. Saipem had previously been awarded five other contracts by the IOC for projects in the same region: Liza Phase 1 and Phase 2, Payara, Yellowtail and Uaru. 

Besides the Guyanese projects, Saipem was also awarded a contract by Equinor associated to the Raia project in Brazil: to install the 200km Route 5B offshore gas pipeline that will transport gas processed at the FPSO onto the coast. It’s scope of work includes the offshore transport and installation of a subsea gas export line and associated equipment in water depths of around 2,900 meters, along with horizontal drilling activities for the shore approach. Saipem will deploy its state-of-the-art Castorone pipelaying vessel for the installation works.  

With this project, Saipem will contribute to the realization of one of the most important gas development projects in Brazil, which could represent 15% of the total domestic demand of the Country. The extracted gas will be transported through pipelines installed by Saipem for approximately 200 km from the field to a gas receiving facility to be built in Cabiúnas, in the city of Macaé in the state of Rio de Janeiro.
