Descrição do evento

CJA/CBMA · in partnership with the Curso Prático de Arbitragem (CPA)

About the course

Every year, Brazil hosts dozens of international arbitration events featuring leading professors from around the world. Yet these gatherings remain out of reach for much of the young arbitration community — because of cost, logistics, or simply because they take place in the wrong city.

The Advanced Course in International Arbitration was designed to close that gap. Five sessions, each taught jointly by an international professor and a Brazilian counterpart, on the questions currently at the centre of the international debate. All live, in English, with simultaneous translation into Portuguese, at a symbolic fee.

This is not an introductory course. It is built for those who already have a foundation in international arbitration and want to reach the state of the art of the discussion — alongside the people writing it.

Programme

Sessions 1, 2, 3 and 5 begin at 10 a.m. Brasília time (BRT) — 9 a.m. New York, 2 p.m. London, 3 p.m. Berlin.

Session 4, on 23 September, is the only evening session: it begins at 8 p.m. BRT. The later slot allows Prof. Waincymer to join live from Melbourne, where it will already be 9 a.m. on the following day. Please take note of this when planning your week.

Each session has a two-hour window reserved for the lecture and discussion.

Session 1 — Tuesday, 15 September Prof. Franco Ferrari (NYU School of Law) and Prof. Fabiane Verçosa (UERJ) The National Character of International Arbitration: Lex Arbitri, Mandatory Rules, and Enforcement of Annulled Awards

Session 2 — Thursday, 17 September Prof. Stefan Kröll (Bucerius Law School) and Prof. Adriana Braghetta Sanctions in International Arbitration: Arbitrability, Procedural Constraints, and Public Policy at the Enforcement Stage

Session 3 — Monday, 21 September Prof. Emilia Onyema (SOAS, University of London) and Prof. Cláudio Finkelstein (PUC-SP) Arbitration in the Global South: Emerging Markets, Regional Integration, and the Future of the Field

Session 4 — Wednesday, 23 September — 8 p.m. BRT Prof. Jeffrey Waincymer (Monash University) and Prof. Renata Steiner Evidence in International Arbitration: Document Production, Witness Evidence, and the Civil Law–Common Law Divide

Session 5 — Friday, 25 September Prof. Catherine Rogers (Università Bocconi) and Prof. Vera Fradera (UFRGS) The Ethics of Appointment: Party Autonomy, Arbitrator Selection and the Limits of the Co-Arbitrator's Role

How it works

Format. Live sessions on Zoom, delivered in English, with simultaneous translation into Portuguese.

Recordings. Each session remains available to enrolled participants until the start of the following session, for those unable to attend live. Access closes after that.

Attendance and assessment. Attendance is recorded through short forms with objective questions on the content of each session.

Certificate. A certificate of completion is issued to participants who score at least 60% across all forms taken together — not on each form individually.

Reading materials. Professors may indicate up to three pre-readings per session, made available to enrolled participants on a shared drive at least two days in advance.

Who it is for

Undergraduate and graduate students, recent graduates and young professionals who already have an intermediate understanding of international arbitration and wish to deepen it. Working knowledge of English is recommended for the reading materials, even though the sessions include simultaneous translation.
